Four Thanksgiving Reads

Thanksgiving is only a week away here in the U.S. If you’re not already salivating over the thought of roast turkey, pumpkin pie and Grandma’s Jell-o casserole (okay, maybe that last one’s just us), here are some books that will prime your appetite and get you to think about reasons to be thankful this holiday.

The Thanksgiving Visitor by Truman Capote

Truman Capote’s Thanksgiving-inspired short story tells of lessons learned when the school bully is invited over for Thanksgiving dinner. With beautiful color illustrations by Beth Peck bringing the story to life, this all-ages classic is a must-read for the holiday season.

The Ghost at the Table by Suzanne Berne

In this novel by Suzanne Berne, Frances and Cynthia are two sisters who get along swimmingly, so long as they remain on opposite sides of the country. After they agree to have Thanksgiving dinner together at Frances’ idyllic home in New England, old tensions come to the surface when the presence of their estranged father dredges up painful reminders of a past they’d rather forget.

Thanksgiving Night by Richard Bausch

If you’re in the mood for lighter reading, this contemporary comedy by Richard Bausch might be just the thing. The antics of Will Butterfield’s elderly relatives may have you giving thanks that your own family isn’t nearly as crazy. Beneath the humor lies a poignant story about love and the true meaning of family.

Bitter Harvest by Susan Bowden

This mystery set in Canada’s Maritime Provinces follows Eleanor Tyler, who is driven to prove her own sanity and find her tormentors after a series of disturbing events leads her family to suspect she’s hallucinating. Things come to a head when the family gathers in the Tyler mansion for the Thanksgiving holiday.
