Fall is just around the corner, bringing with it everything that is good and lovely in the world – perfect weather, gorgeous colors, the sound of leaves crunching underfoot, Oktoberfest, Halloween candy and pumpkin-flavored everything. Of course, one of our favorite things about fall is chilly nights spent curled up under a warm blanket with a cup of tea and a great book.
If, like us, you’re chomping at the bit for fall’s arrival, check out one of these classics, each of which is certain to put you in mind of this most excellent time of year (can you tell we have a season bias?):
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee – this classic coming-of-age tale of injustice in the deep south as seen through the eyes of children is the perfect book to bridge the transition from summer to fall.
The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien – whichever generation of Baggins you decide to follow, the Shire is sure to put you in the mood for crisp autumn days and cozy nights.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte – this gothic tale of a Victorian orphan who becomes a governess for a wealthy bachelor who hides a deep, dark secret is an excellent companion to a comfy chair and a roaring fire.
The Complete Stories and Poems by Edgar Allen Poe – no matter which story you choose, as Halloween edges closer you can’t beat this gothic storyteller and the father of the mystery genre for the moody and the macabre.
Of course, this short list is just the tip of the iceberg. Tell us your favorite fall reads in the comments!
