What tea would Jane Austen’s heroines choose?

Jane Austen is known for matching her heroines with their perfect mates. But what about matching them with the perfect tea? We thought we’d take a stab at determining what would be several of Ms. Austen’s best-loved heroines’ tea of choice.

Elizabeth Bennet, Pride & Prejudice

Lizzie Bennet exudes sassiness and strength, with a spicy wit and adventurous spirit. Her tea of choice? Likely an exotic spiced chai imported from India. And with Mr. Darcy’s £10,000 a year at her disposal, she can enjoy it as often as she likes.

Emma Woodhouse, Emma

This matchmaker possesses youth, beauty, and a romantic streak a mile long. Her tea would likely have a touch of romance to it, too, along with a touch of excitement. Perhaps an orange pekoe, or an elegant white tea blended with rose hips.

Elinor Dashwood, Sense and Sensibility

Loyal, dutiful and practical, the eldest Miss Dashwood is down to earth and has the strength to do what must be done for the good of her family. Her tendency to put others first might help her feel entitled to something a bit more indulgent than a basic black tea, like the fortifying jolt of a strong yerba mate.

Anne Elliot, Persuasion

The lovelorn Anne is sensible and gentle with a strong sense of humility. Her tea of choice would likely be something equally humble and practical, such as an English Breakfast tea, though she might also turn to a calming chamomile after long days of dealing with her flamboyant family.
